Higher education, similar to the goods and other services, has to compete internationally and hence quality provision and satisfying the expressed needs of stake-holders becomes imperative. To address these concerns, an independent National accreditation agency the NATIONAL ASSESSMENT AND ACCREDITATION COUNCIL (NAAC) was established in 1994 as an autonomous institution of the University Grants Commission (UGC). The mandate of NAAC as reflected in its vision statement is in making quality assurance an integral part of the functioning of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The Assessment &Accreditation process is a beginning to bring in uniform quality and position HEIs in such a way that they address more directly the quality provision and the expressed needs of the stakeholders.

The vision of NAAC is:

  • To make quality the defining element of higher education in India through acombination of self and external quality evaluation, promotion and sustenanceinitiatives.

The mission statements of the NAAC aim at translating the NAAC’s vision into action plans and define specific tasks of NAAC engagement and endeavor as given below:

  • To arrange for periodic assessment and accreditation of institutions of higher education or units thereof, or specific academic programmes or projects;
  • To stimulate the academic environment for promotion of quality in teaching-learning and research in higher education institutions;
  • To encourage self-evaluation, accountability, autonomy and innovations in higher education;
  • To undertake quality-related research studies, consultancy and training programmes, and
  • To collaborate with other stakeholders of higher education for quality evaluation, promotion and sustenance.

  • Contributing to National Development
  • Fostering Global Competencies among Students
  • Inculcating a Value System among Students
  • Promoting the Use of Technology
  • Quest for Excellence

Striving to achieve its goals as guided by its vision and mission statements, NAAC primarily focuses on assessment of the quality of HEIs in the country. The NAAC methodology for Assessment and Accreditation is very much similar to that followed by Quality Assurance (QA) agencies across the world and consists of self-assessment by the HEIs and external peer assessment by NAAC.

In pursuance of the Action Plan of the NAAC, for performance evaluation, assessment and accreditation and quality upgradation of higher educationinstitutions (HEIs), the NAAC proposes that every accredited institute establish an Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) as a post-accreditation quality sustenance measure. Since quality enhancement is a continuous process, the IQAC becomes a part of an institution’s system and works towards realising the goals of quality enhancement and sustenance. The prime task of the IQAC is to develop a system for conscious, consistent and catalytic improvement in the performance of institutionstowards academic excellence.
Role of IQAC in an institution is as follows :

  • Development and application of quality benchmarks or parameters for various academic and administrative activities of the institution.
  • Facilitating the creation of a learner – centric environment conducive to quality education and faculty maturation to adopt the required knowledge and technology for participatory teaching and learning process.
  • Arrangement for feedback response from students, parents and other stakeholders on quality – related institutional processes.
  • Dissemination of information on various quality parameters of higher education.
  • Organization of inter and intra institutional workshops, seminars on quality related themes and promotion of quality circles.
  • Documentation of the various programmes or activities leading to quality improvement.
  • Acting as a nodal agency of the Institution for coordinating quality – related activities, including adoption and dissemination of best practices.
  • Development and maintenance of institutional database through MIS for the purpose of maintaining and enhancing the institutional quality.
  • Development of Quality Culture in the institution.
  • Preparation of the Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR) as per guidelines and parameters of NAAC, to be submitted to NAAC.
