Dept Profile

Marathi is taught at the First, Second and Third Year degree college levels. Marathi Ancillary is taught at the First, Second and Third Year levels. Guest lectures are organised on various literary themes. Eminent Marathi writers and poets are invited to give talks in the Marathi Wangmaya Mandal programmes. Screenings of Marathi drama and films are followed by discussions and interactions with resource persons. Altekar Essay Competition and Altekar Memorial Debate Competition are other activities. Marathi Wangmaya Mandal also organises many literary competitions.

CHEMISTRY

Dept Profile

Chemistry is taught at the First, Second and Third Year degree college levels. Students are registered for MSc by Papers in all branches of Chemistry and for Ph D. Field Visits are organised for students to various industries around Mumbai and to distant places. Chemistry Seminar organises curricular and extra – curricular events of the department. The Dept completed 125 years in 2012-13. On this occasion, two SYBSC students launched a website www.s2chem.com dedicated to understanding the role of Chemistry and of chemicals in everyday life. The website has a dedicated forum www.psychochemist.s2chem.com for discussing current developments in Chemistry.

Dr D V Prabhu, adjunct-professor, was recipient of the Best Chemistry Teacher Award of The Higher Education Forum (HEF) of the Somaiya Trust on Sept 13, 2014. He also received the Int. Life Time Achievement Award for Teaching of ISCA on Sept 8, 2014.

COMPUTER SCIENCE

The course was introduced in the year 1999 – 2000. It is an integrated course under which students can offer subject combinations of Maths-Stats-Computer Science (MSK) or Physics-Maths-Computer Science (PMK), culminating in Computer Science in the Third Year. The course is offered at the First, Second and Third Year at the degree college.

A good number of academic activities and lectures by IT professionals help to make students industry-ready. Campus Placements in eminent IT industries is a regular feature.

The first three University Toppers in Microbiology for 2013-14 were from Wilson Microbiology department : Shailesh Lad, Ruth Amana and Anagha Naik have made us proud.

MANAGEMENT STUDIES

Dept Profile

Bachelor of Management Studies, a self-financing subject, was introduced in the year 1999-2000. It is taught at the First, Second and Third Year of degree college. After completion of the second year, students take up summer internships, the number of companies for internships being around 40. Workshops and Industrial Visits are conducted to sharpen the minds.

The department has undertaken many social initiatives so far :

HOPE Initiaive 2014 saw over 2000 students march on the Marine Drive to voice against Child Abuse. Previous HOPE Initiatives have focused on Road Safety with ‘Youth of India – Bike Rally’, on Female Infanticide with ‘Dance for Life- Flash Mob’, and on Hunger with ‘Live and Let Live – Zombie Walk ‘.

Terry Fox Run 2015 for Cancer Awareness in which 50 schools and 30 colleges participated netting donations amounting to Rs5.5 crore which was donated to Tata Memorial Hospital for cancer research among children.

Cybersucked – to educate student community on unnecessary virtual engagement and to expose them to cyber bullying.

Dirty Mumbaikars – Cleanliness Drive to clean surrounding areas of college premises.

Extension Programme with Wilson High School.

Adorea is the BMS fest that draws in around 25-30 Mumbai colleges to the event.

Dept Profile

Bachelor of Mass Media, a self-financing subject was introduced in the year 2000-01. It is taught at the First, Second and Third Year of degree college. Lectures of eminent persons from the fields of theatre, literature, cinematography, advertising, journalism are organised. Film screenings and workshops are done for brainstorming and discussions. Industrial Visits expose students to local cultures and pertinent issues of those regions. The dept has outreach programmes organised with various NGOs.

Polaris is the BMM fest that draws in around 35 Mumbai colleges to the event.
