View SyllabusThe Marathi Department of Wilson College is one of the oldest departments in the College, established in 1861. It strives to equip the students with linguistic proficiency in Marathi and encourage their creative ability. Marathi department offers two courses at First Year level: Marathi Compulsory (Second Language) and Marathi Literature. Marathi as a second language is only at FYBA level. Marathi literature continues in SYBA also. Students can opt for Marathi as a second language as well as Marathi literature at the same time, as it is one of the subjects offered in many subject combinations. The objectives are to develop higher linguistic skills in Marathi as well as to develop a critical and creative approach towards Marathi literature. The subject Marathi helps in seeking various employment opportunities such as Maharashtra state recruitment exams like Class C and D, to prepare for the competitive exams like UPSC / MPSC, the Teaching field, Journalism, Translation, field of Media and Entertainment, Creative writing etc.
ACTIVITIES:
The Marathi Department encourages the students to share their understanding and experiences on a topic. The creative writing of students is published in the ‘Marathi Section’ of our college magazine ‘The Wilsonian’.
It organizes a special Essay Writing and Debate Competition in the memory of the former Head of Marathi Department Dr. M. M. Altekar. Enrichment lecturers, special talks and interdisciplinary lectures by experts related to syllabus / career guidance are arranged by the department. Screening of Marathi films / drama related to syllabus, Educational visits are also organized.
The birth anniversary of renowned author V. V. Shirvadkar alias Kusumagraj is celebrated as Marathi Bhasha Gaurav Din every year. Marathi Literary Society is very active in Wilson College. It organizes various competitions like essay writing, debate, poetry writing, poetry recitation, Marathi crossword etc.
